Don’t forget, the demo of Conquest of Arthenia is today starting at 2pm.  Come out and try your hand at the new strategy card game.  In conjunction with this, we’re most likely running a free campaign for the new Dungeon Masters Guide 2 for D&D beginning around 4pm.

Let us suck your blood!

We now have a sign-up sheet in the store for people to sign up for the blood drive we’re tentatively planning in January with United Blood Services. You can also email me and I can add your name to the list. Literature on the event and about donating blood is available in the store.

Brian Keene Signing: The Afterword

Posted on November 23rd, 2008 in Events, Store by Jeremy

Brian Keene SignatureI feel sorry for you if you couldn’t make it to the signing. It was a blast. Brian did several interviews, including one for the store (watch it by scrolling down to the blog below this one), one with some of the YMCA kids, and another with one of the local high schools. Channel 5 was also there. Brian took the questions in stride and answered them like a champ. I was feeling tired for the guy.

Brian Keene Signing group shot

Throughout the four hours, there was a steady flow of traffic coming in and out. Keene signed books, comics, and, most interestingly, an electric guitar.

Initially, I didn’t know what to expect. Those pesky butterflies had been floating around in my stomach, that nag in the back of your mind asking what do you do if nobody shows up. It would have been embarrassing to not have pulled in a crowd. You convince this well-known author to come do a signing at your store and the greatest fear is that the turnout will be so poor that you’ll be asking yourself if the apocalypse occurred without you knowing it (c’mon, we’ve all been to a Barnes & Nobles during one of those times). That perhaps you, the author, and a couple of your buddies are the only survivors of an extinction event that happened behind your back. Fortunately, things didn’t play out that way.

Once again, I apologize if you couldn’t make it.

For a much better (and thorough) narrative of events that took place on the 15th, visit Tom Piccirilli’s The Cold Spot and read about it. I think he deserved a shirt.

A huge thanks goes out to Brian for his willingness to jump on a plane, take a ride to the middle of nowhere, and spend hours answering questions, scrawling his name on paper, and never failing to smile for the cameras.

Thanks to Josh for suggesting to Brian that he should make the trip out here.

Thanks to Craig for filming our interview with Brian and doing such a masterful job of editing it.

And thanks to everyone who showed up with books in hand or purchased them from the store. You’re the reason why we did it.

P.S. – As it turns out, Josh really did lose his job the following Monday. Please keep him in your thoughts as he hunts for a new one.

Oh, and I almost forgot: last, but not least, thanks to PJ, who really cannot be thanked ENOUGH!

Toys For Tots

Posted on November 8th, 2008 in Store by Jeremy

Toys for totsHeroes Only comics and games is a proud sponsor of the Toys For Tots Program.

“The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.”

“The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help needy children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable natural resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.”

We currently have a drop-off box located in the store, so if you’re feeling generous this holiday season and would like to donate toys so that less fortunate children can enjoy a toy-rich Christmas as well, please drop them off at the store.

As a store, we’ve already donated a variety of items, and the box is a beginning to fill up with toys.

Consider this the swift kick to the rear. The point is to make sure as many kids as possible experience a Merry Christmas.

So get out there and give! Whether you use us or one of the many other drop-off locations around town – open your wallets a little wider and GIVE. Let’s make sure as many kids as possible get the kind of Christmas they deserve. Heck, I can guarantee you’ll walk away with that warm-and-fuzzy feeling one gets when giving to a worthy cause!

1st Anniversary (belated) & Other Stuff

Posted on October 18th, 2008 in Store by Jeremy

Hey guys,

On October 6th, Heroes Only turned one-year-old without missing a beat.  After a year, the store is still healthy and has already advanced from a slow crawl to walking upright on its own.

Today is the 18th of October.  I suppose I could lie and say that this blog is late in coming because I’m just such a busy guy that I forgot all about our one year milestone, but what kind of guy would I be if I can’t admit the truth, folks?

I got lazy.

Sure, I’m fairly busy, too, but in the hustle and bustle, I could have wedged this blog in on time.

For better or worse, that’s my apology.  Now that that’s out of the way:

Let’s discuss some of things that the future holds for the store and all of the great people that help allow us to open the door everyday.

1. The Heroes Only eBay Store.  When?  Now.  You’ll see some of our store merchandise for sale there as well as taking consignments for those trying to unload comics, cards, games, figures, and other related collectibles.  We’ll have a few things up for auction beginning this weekend.  I’ll have a link to the store up on our site either today or tomorrow.  If there’s anything you’d like to consign feel free to email or speak with me.

2. More Saturday tournaments.  We’re going to have Saturday tournaments much more frequently and try to pump some more creativity into them by offering new formats and more unorthodox play conditions.  Don’t worry, there’ll also be the traditional standards mixed in there as well.  Also keep your eyes open for more creative prizes to be awarded.

3. Secret Thing That will Benefit Customers with Comic Book Subscription Boxes.  That’s the working title.  Comic book subscribers can look forward to experiencing more control of their subscription boxes in the near future.  We’re keeping this under wraps for now, but look for this to be unrolled in the next month or two.

4. Member Loyalty Program.  In the coming months we’ll be offering a customer loyalty program that will offer participating customers discounts on merchandise in the store.

5. Brian Keene.  This is probably the closest event on the horizon.  The famous, award-winning horror author will be stopping by the store on November 15th to sign autographs from 1 to 4pm.  Comics and books will be available.  We’re offering raffling off random prizes throughout the day.  For more info on Brian Keene, visit the Events link of our website.

Those are just a few of things you can look forward to beginning now and in the near future.  Believe me, we’ve got plenty more where that came from.  If you have any questions, feel free to email me. Jeremy@heroesonly.net

Thanks to everyone who stuck with us and contributed during our first year.  We appreciate it!  Look forward to many more good times to come!
